We are lacking in so many ways, but we don’t realize it until we go through some deep, agonizing, and prolonged pain, suffering, and loss. Pain, suffering, and loss will wake you up to that fact.
In his book, The Problem of Pain, C.S. Lewis so aptly said, “We can ignore even pleasure. But pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”
It’s so true. When life is going well … when life is pain and problem free … we are often lacking, dull, distracted, self-absorbed, arrogant, and even disobedient. Pain, suffering, and loss can actually be one of the best things that happens to us if we respond to it the right way … like Romans 8:28 says …
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.”
I don’t always respond to it the right way. God has been teaching me how I need to respond. We look at Philippians 4:4-9.
